Special Management Unit Departures

The Georgia Department of Corrections location index lists the Special Management Unit at the Jackson prison address. It is a state-prison unit, not a county jail and not a separate local release-feed program. The agency that owns its custody record is GDC.

A person can leave the unit without leaving prison custody. Reassignment to another housing area or transfer to another GDC facility ends the stay at the unit but is not a release to the community. Parole is conditional community release under Parole Board authority. A maximum release or discharge reflects sentence-end information in the state record. A detainer, meaning another authority's request to hold or receive the person, can produce another transfer.

Confirm a Special Unit Release

A facility change points first to an internal transfer. A past or changed release field requires confirmation. GDC itself instructs users to verify offender information through written correspondence, so the public result should be treated as a starting record rather than a substitute for a certified response.

The GDC location index places the unit at 2978 Highway 36 West, Jackson, GA 30233. The research did not confirm a unit-specific public phone or public counter hours. Do not substitute the Butts County Jail number, since that office controls a different custody system.

Special Unit Release Records

A focused request should distinguish release from transfer. Ask GDC to identify whether the person remained in state custody after leaving the unit and, if not, the type and effective date of release.

The maximum date and parole timing are not interchangeable. A Tentative Parole Month, often shortened to TPM, is a possible parole timing marker rather than a final grant. Parole From the Special Unit

The Georgia Department of Community Supervision handles community supervision. DCS should be consulted for an actual supervision question after release, not used to guess whether a prison transfer occurred. The supervising office depends on the approved community placement. Though the Barnesville Field Office serves Butts County and nearby jurisdictions, a person leaving this statewide unit may live and report elsewhere.

Jackson State Prison Complexity

The Special Management Unit, GA Diagnostic Class Prison, and Butts County Jail share Jackson as a place name. Their records do not share one custodian. Butts County Jail is operated by the Sheriff's Office and handles local bookings. The state facilities are operated by GDC and may house people convicted anywhere in Georgia.

That distinction is more than administrative. A name disappearing from a county roster says nothing about movement inside GDC. Likewise, an offender leaving the Special Management Unit does not produce a county release record unless there was a separate local booking. When the Unit Result Changes

A new facility location usually signals continued GDC custody. Record the old and new facility names, then use the current GDC listing for contact. A parole result should be checked in the Parolee Database and with DCS when supervision details matter. A max-out or discharge should be confirmed through GDC records. Another authority named in the record requires that authority's system.

Written GDC Verification

Written verification is useful when a public result vanishes, dates conflict, or release seems to have occurred without a parolee result. Keep the request narrow. Ask GDC to confirm the last facility, departure date, release or transfer type, effective release date, and destination agency if releasable. Include enough identifiers to prevent a name-only mismatch.

If a sentencing judgment is needed, contact the clerk in the county where the criminal case was filed. Butts County court records are relevant only when the conviction or a separate booking arose there. The unit's location does not establish court jurisdiction. This is why the GDC ID and sentencing county are often more useful than the Jackson address.

Do not infer community release from silence. Follow the last verified custodian until a record names the next one or confirms discharge. That approach preserves the difference between leaving a restrictive unit, leaving a prison, and leaving correctional custody altogether.
